George W. Bush "knew that the prisoners at Guantánamo were innocent"

by Tim Reid, The Times, 9/4/2010. Translated by Mary Rizzo, Tlaxcala
George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld have covered the shipment of hundreds of innocent men to prison camp at Guantánamo Bay because they feared that their release would undermine their push to war in Iraq and the wider war against terrorism according to a new document obtained by The Times.
These accusations were made by Lawrence Wilkerson, a close collaborator with Colin Powell, former Republican Secretary of State, in a signed statement in support of a complaint filed by a Guantanamo detainee. This is the first time these allegations were made by a prominent member of the Bush administration.
Colonel Wilkerson, who was chief of staff to General Powell when he ran the State Department, focused its criticism primarily on Mr. Cheney and Mr. Rumsfeld. He said that former Vice-President and Secretary of Defense knew that most of the 742 first detainees to Guantánamo in 2002 were innocent, but felt it was "politically impossible to release them."
It is understood that General Powell, who left the Bush administration in 2005, angry against the misinformation he had given the world unwittingly, when he advocated the invasion of Iraq in UN, supported the statement of Colonel Wilkerson.
